The Czech Republic concluded the ratification process of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Canada adding the Czech Republic to the list of countries that have ratified the SPA (Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, Hungary and Slovenia, according to the information from the depository).
Negotiations for the SPA were concluded in September 2014 and the instrument was signed in Brussels in October 2016. On April 1, 2017, the EU and Canada began to provisionally apply the SPA in areas falling within the EU’s exclusive competence.
The SPA responds to the great and increasing dynamism of political and economic cooperation with Canada based on shared values. It reflects the changes taking place within the EU, as well as the growing determination of the partners to enhance and build on the existing range of their cooperation.
The SPA develops the EU-Canada strategic partnership in two broad areas: international cooperation and political dialogue. The aim is to increase bilateral cooperation in fields such as foreign policy, sustainable development, research and innovation, and education and culture. The partners will search for common answers to the problems of today’s world including security, the fight against terrorism, organized crime and cybercrime.
