Deputy Minister Kolaja Attended a Meeting of ASEM Foreign Ministers

On November 20–21, 2017, 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was held in Nay Pyi Taw (Myanmar), chaired by Aung San Suu Kyi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister of Myanmar. The Czech Republic was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Václav Kolaja. EU High Commissioner for Foreign Policy Federica Mogherini attended for the EU.

Ministerial meetings focused on the issues of interconnection between peace and sustainable development, as well as the future of cooperation between Asia and Europe. Deputy Minister Kolaja presented the priorities of the Czech Presidency to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The informal part of the program focused on current global and regional issues, including, among other things, the situation in the Arakan state (where violence and waves of repression against the Rohingya population have recently occurred), developments on the Korean Peninsula, the situation in the South China Sea, terrorism, migration and Eastern Ukraine.

At the margins of the ministerial meeting, selected European and Asian ministers met with Suu Kyi to discuss the situation in the Arakan state. Myanmar and Bangladesh also announced the opening of negotiations on a Memorandum of Understanding on the return of refugees to Myanmar, which was welcomed by most of the speakers.
