Deputy Minister Dürr Appraised Russian Human Rights Defenders

 

On January 18, 2018, Deputy Minister for Europe Jakub Dürr met the founder of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation Ms. Zhanna Nemcova with whom he discussed current cases of human rights abuses in Russia.

In this context, Deputy Minister Dürr appreciated the work of human rights defenders in the country and called for the immediate release of Oyub Titiev, chairman of the Chechen office of the Memorial Human Rights Center, who was arrested on January 9. Also, he condemned the burning-down of the Memorial Office in Ingushetia on January 17.

Deputy Minister Dürr was interested in the activities of the Foundation and welcomed the establishment of Boris Nemtsov’s Center for Russian Studies that is a joint project of the Foundation and the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. Zhanna Nemcova’s father Boris Nemtsov, former Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Government, was assassinated in February 2015.
