Asia Meets Europe Day

March 1 is the Day of the Euro-Asian cooperation – “ASEM Day”. ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) is an informal community forming a platform for dialogue and cooperation between Europe and Asia. Czech Republic is a member since 2004.

ASEM has 53 members, 30 countries from Europe (EU 28 + Norway and Switzerland) and 21 from Asia. General Secretariat of ASEAN and the European Union are also members. ASEM activities are based on three pillars – political, economic and socio-cultural. Since ASEM is a flexible forum, it has no fixed agenda. This enables ASEM members to discuss current global and regional issues.

The main advantage of ASEM membership for the Czech Republic is a unique opportunity of a structured dialogue. It opens possibilities to pursue Czech Republic’s economic interests by participating in joint international projects. ASEM gives the Czech Republic the opportunity to share its expertise in selected areas or to host international events and meetings. Furthermore, ASEM membership can facilitate dialogue with countries where the Czech Republic has no diplomatic representation.

In April 2016, Charles University in Prague hosted the 5th ASEM Rectors Conference and Student Forum. In July 2016, Miloš Zeman, President of the Czech Republic, attended the 11th ASEM Summit of Heads of States and Governments in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia).
