Deputy Minister Dürr met US Senator Portman

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jakub Dürr received the United States Senator from the state of Ohio Rob Portman, accompanied by the US Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Stephen King. Senator Portman is a member of several key committees of the US Senate, including the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Senator Portman praised the long-standing partnership and cooperation between the Czech Republic and the United States in the year of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between former Czechoslovakia and the United States. The main topics of the meeting were human rights (and the Czech role in their support), security cooperation including within NATO and ways of strengthening transatlantic bond. The counterparts also touched upon the situation in Europe and current developments within the EU. Deputy Minister Dürr raised the question of the introduction of the tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium into the United States. Senator Portman expressed the conviction that the US and EU negotiators will be able to reach mutually beneficial agreement in that area by the end of April. Deputy Minister Dürr also expressed interest in continuing negotiations on further liberalization of transatlantic trade.
