100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and Denmark

On April 25-26 bilateral consultations of Deputy Ministers  of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and Denmark took place between Aleš Chmelař and his Danish counterpart Carsten Grønbech- Jensen. On the eve of the consultations both Deputy Ministers took part in opening of exhibition “Sophie´s Choice/The Czech Way” to mark the centenary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.

While opening the exhibition both Deputy Ministers reminded not only the centenary of the diplomatic relations and their development but also underlined the excellent nature of bilateral relations today.

Exhibition itself was introduced by its author Judita Matyášová. It illustrates the stories of about Jewish young people from Czechoslovakia who escaped tragic fate of theirs families by leaving the so called „Protectorate“ to Denmark.  About eighty children had been accepted by their foster families in the Danish countryside which enabled them to survive the first years of the war before they left further to seek refuge in Sweden.

Bilateral consultations confirmed friendly and smooth relationship between the Czech Republic and Denmark and the potential for their further development. Both sided agreed that both countries are very good partners and allies in the EU and NATO who share similar values and positions on international scene. There was an understanding that in connection with the upcoming Brexit there is a need for “like-minded” countries to cooperate more closely in shaping the future of the EU, its institutional setup as well as strategic priorities for the next European Commission for period 2019-2024.
