Czech Republic to provide another CZK 10m to Belarus following recommendation of the MFA

On Monday, 24 August 2020, the Czech government approved a proposal by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish a fund to help Belarusians affected by the repressions of the local regime. This year an extra CZK 10m will be added to the annual aid. The funds will be used for humanitarian aid to those affected by the post-election protests in Belarus and will go mainly towards medical and psychosocial assistance.

"We were among those who initiated a rapid international response," Czech Foreign Minister Tomáš Petříček said. "But we also want to provide practical assistance, namely to people who have been victims of violence and torture, as well as their families, people who have pointed out irregularities in the election process and lost their jobs as a result. Due to our history, we cannot close our eyes to what is happening in Belarus. Belarusians should have the right to freely choose their future."

The financial assistance will also go towards rehabilitation stays, support for independent media and non-profit organisations focusing on human rights issues, and expanding the number of scholarships for Belarusian students. Assistance will also be provided for the Belarusian minority in the Czech Republic and their activities.
