Minister Petříček held talks with his North Macedonian counterpart Osmani

Minister of Foreign Affairs Tomáš Petříček met with the North Macedonia Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani at the Czernin Palace on 15 December 2020. The ministers mainly discussed the current political and economic relations between the two countries. Special attention was paid to the process of North Macedonia's accession to the European Union.

This was Minister Osmani's first working visit to the Czech Republic. Other topics of discussion were the situation in the Western Balkans, cooperation with the Visegrad Group and migration. Minister Petříček also emphasised cooperation with North Macedonia within NATO.

The Czech foreign minister expressed regret about the failure to reach an agreement in the EU Council in December on the approval of a negotiating framework for accession talks with North Macedonia. "The Czech Republic is a long-term supporter of North Macedonian integration into the EU, and that is why we also sought to start accession negotiations between the EU and North Macedonia, which we succeeded in doing in March this year," Petříček said. Both ministers hope that North Macedonia will soon be able to continue the accession process.
