Deputy Minister Tlapa received delegation of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services

 

On 8 November 2021, Deputy Foreign Minister Martin Tlapa received delegation of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services headed by the Deputy Director-General William K. Thuku. The visit of Kenyan delegation comes as a follow-up to the visit of Deputy Minister Tlapa to Nairobi in September 2021. The purpose of the visit is to study the operational systems of the capital Prague and to be acquainted with products and services provided to municipalities by the leading Czech companies.

More than 9 million people is living in the Nairobi metropolitan area. The area is developing very fast and consequently, the increase of the population generates many challenges. To effectively cope with all problems, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta decided in March 2020 on creation of a special governmental agency – Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), which task is to address the basic needs to Nairobi’s population, like affordable housing, sanitation, transport, health care, protection of environment, etc. During the last year, the NSM has built for instance nineteen new hospitals and upgraded another five. Great effort is devoted to provide for affordable housing and to improve the public transportation.

During the meeting, Deputy Minister Tlapa stressed the interest of the Czech Republic to further strengthen and diversify its cooperation with Kenya. He was confident, that the ongoing visit will enable the Kenyan delegation to learn how the basic services to its inhabitants are in the capital Prague assured, as well as to be acquainted with goods and services provided by the leading Czech companies to Prague and other municipalities. Deputy Director-General W. Thuku expressed its gratitude for organizing the visit. He stressed that the Nairobi Metropolitan Services has a great interest in promoting close co-operation with Czech partners and he was confident, that their visit to the Czech Republic will help to intensify bilateral relations. Health care, affordable housing, waste management, mass transportation, public lighting and transport are the main areas of their interest.

During its three-day visit to the Czech Republic, besides the meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prague City Hall, the delegation of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services will discuss the practical modalities of organization of the Prague Public Transport and sanitation. Envisaged are also meetings with Czech companies providing goods and services to municipalities.
