MEDEVAC mission in Lebanon

In the framework of the MEDEVAC programme of the Czech Republic almost one hundred of the cataract surgeries were provided to vulnerable patients with the cooperation of MEDEVAC Czech, Czech Embassy, Amel Association International and Rafik Hariri University Hospital.

As a continuation of the cooperation and support of the Czech Republic to the Rafik Hariri University Hospital in Beirut (RHUH), the Czech medical team was deployed to RHUH from 31. 5. to 11. 6. 2021 to perform eye surgeries on patients with cataract.

This was the second mission of the Czech ophthalmological team in Lebanon. The first MEDEVAC mission in Lebanon was conducted in 2019 with a great success when 83 patients were operated. The 2021 MEDEVAC mission managed to operate 97 patients. As the MEDEVAC programme is a part of the humanitarian aid, the main beneficiaries are socially disadvantaged Lebanese and refugees who otherwise would have no access to such treatment. The Czech medical team uses during the surgeries a special ophthalmological apparatus that was donated to the Rafik Hariri University Hospital by the Czech Republic also in the framework of the MEDEVAC programme.

This year, there was more than 50% patients of Lebanese nationality, out of the total of operated patients by the mission. That reflects the effects of the economic crisis on the living conditions of the population. The dire situation is documented by the extreme demand for the planned operations within the future missions. There was 600 patients registered  in a single day. The demand for eye cataract surgeries in Lebanon is enormous.

Thanks to MEDEVAC Czech, the hospital is able to manage the already high and still increasing demand of services to the vulnerable patients from both Lebanese and refugee communities.

The MEDEVAC is a permanent medical humanitarian programme of the Czech Republic active since 1993. It focuses on providing access to medical care for vulnerable groups of persons. The care provided is free of charge and exclusively for civilians – persons, who are in dire of such medical care or whose condition prevents them from leading a dignified life.
