Czech and Lithuanian Foreign Ministers condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine and highlight the excellent cooperation of both countries

On March 17, Foreign Minister J. Lipavský welcomed the Foreign Minister of Lithuania G. Landsbergis. Ministers discussed the assistance to Ukraine and its bid to join the EU, tightening of sanctions against Russia and involvement of the Czech army in the protection of the Baltic states.

Ministers repeatedly condemned Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, stressed the importance of active participation in NATO and the EU and the necessity of coordinating our steps against Russia. An important element of the Czech-Lithuanian cooperation is the participation of the Czech army in the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence in Lithuania. Czechia will play a significant role in fulfilling its obligations towards the Alliance by protecting the Lithuanian airspace from the base in Šiauliai. Czech pilots will join the Czech ground forces already operating in the country from their base in Rukla.

“In the case of further strengthening of the NATO’s Eastern border, Czechia will play a significant logistics role,” Minister J. Lipavský mentioned.

Minister G. Landsbergis stressed the importance of supplying Ukraine with more weapons in order for it to be more effective in facing Putin’s encroaching ideology. At the end of the meeting, both ministers emphasized the excellent state of Czech-Lithuanian relations. They also stressed the need for further cooperation in the face of the attack on our democratic system, while supporting Ukraine’s bid to join the EU.

The winner can be only one, and it will be Ukraine,” Minister G. Landsbergis reiterated.
