Czechia condemned sham referenda during reinforced meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council

Political Director of Czech MFA David Konecký represented Czechia at the reinforced meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council held on Thursday 29 September 2022. The Permanent Council convened in order to discuss illegal attempts by Russia to legalize the occupation of eastern parts of Ukraine by holding so called “referenda”.

“Inviolability of frontiers and territorial integrity of states are among the principles embedded in the Helsinki Final Act. These are the building stones this organization and the system of collective security in Europe stand on,” said Political Director Konecký and stressed that Czechia strongly condemns the sham referenda orchestrated on Ukrainian territory controlled by the Russian military. They represent a violation of international law. The outcomes will be null and void and will not be recognized by Czechia.

Political Director Konecký also reiterated that the atrocities committed by Russian army in Ukraine must be independently investigated. Czechia therefore calls for the creation of a special international tribunal to prosecute the crimes of aggression committed by Russia against Ukraine.

Permanent Council of the Organisation for Cooperation and Security in Europe (OCSE) is the political decision-making body of the OCSE and is composed of Permanent Representatives of the Participating States. Given the political gravity of this meeting’s agenda, it will be held in a reinforced format with participation of Senior Officials from national Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
