Czechia voted in favour of the UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and demanding withdrawal of Russian military forces

Today, in New York, the Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution strongly condemning Russia’s unlawful, unprovoked and unjustified use of force against Ukraine and demands that Russia immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw its military forces from the entire territory of Ukraine, including Crimea.

The outcome of the vote clearly shows that the international community strongly opposes Russia’s aggressive behaviour against Ukraine and points to Russia’s international isolation. Overall 141 UN Member States voted in favour of the resolution, including the Czech Republic. Only five countries voted against, including Russia, 35 UN Member States abstained, 96 UN Member States cosponsored the draft resolution, including the Czech Republic.

The General Assembly resolution also condemns Russia’s decision to increase the readiness of its nuclear forces. It deplores the involvement of Belarus in the aggression against Ukraine.

On Monday, the first day of the Emergency Special Session, as one of the first speakers, the Czech Republic delivered its national statement. In the strongest possible terms we condemned Russia’s killing of innocent civilians, including children, in Ukraine and stressed that Russia must be held accountable for the gross violations of the UN Charter and international law.

The three-day Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly, which started on Monday, convened after Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Friday, 25 February. Due to Russia’s abuse of its veto power, the Security Council has been blocked in delivering its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
