Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Martin Smolek welcomed President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs welcomed the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr. Tiny Kox. The meeting focused on the main challenges that Europe faces today – six months after the aggression of Russia against Ukraine has started.  In this context, activities of the Czech EU Presidency were also discussed.

The participants emphasized the endeavours of the Council of Europe in the context of efforts to isolate Russia as much as possible on the international scene following its aggression against Ukraine. Already on March 16, 2022, a landmark decision to expel Russia from the Council of Europe was adopted by consensus of all member states. In this context, Deputy Minister Smolek also appreciated the significant role of PACE which unanimously supported the exclusion of Russia from the organization. The meeting further served as an opportunity to discuss the vision and priorities of the Council of Europe for the next period, relations between the Council of Europe and the EU, including the accession of the EU to the European Convention on Human Rights and other issues of common interest.

During his visit to Prague, Mr. Kox participated in the meeting of the selection panel for the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize. Václav Havel's legacy in the fight for human rights and democracy in the world continues to inspire human rights defenders across the globe. Czech foreign policy is also based on this tradition and the principle of supporting fundamental democratic values.
