Foreign ministers of Czechia and the United Kingdom signed a memorandum on future cooperation

The heads of diplomacies of Czechia and the United Kingdom have signed up for future strategic foreign policy and security cooperation. The memorandum, Statement of Intent, was signed on 27 May, 2022 during the visit of the UK Foreign Secretary in Prague. Jan Lipavský and Liz Truss also attended the ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation Anthropoid. They paid tribute to all the victims of Nazi terror and remembered the then cooperation between the Czechs and the British.

"We intend to look for common areas of cooperation, such as approaches towards Russia, China, security issues, NATO enlargement and human rights," said Minister Jan Lipavský. "We paid close attention to sanctions against Russia and their coordination between the European Union and the United Kingdom," he added.

Foreign Secretary Truss's first visit to Prague was a manifestation of above-standard relations between the two countries. Czechia considers the UK as like-minded, and as a close ally. Both Ministers focused on the further development of bilateral relations. They agreed to expand cooperation in bilateral trade, investments, science, and research.

The ministers discussed many current foreign policy issues, the current state of relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom, and the situation in the Indo-Pacific or the Western Balkans. They agreed that, despite the conflict in Ukraine, the Western Balkans must remain at the heart of a joint effort to stabilize the region.

Minister Lipavský and Secretary Truss confirmed that Czechia and the UK would continue to work closely together to provide comprehensive support and assistance to Ukraine, including strengthening its defense capabilities. The two countries would also coordinate the strengthening of sanctions and other measures aimed at averting Russia's aggressive behavior, punishing Russian war crimes, and restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
