Minister Lipavský supports innovation and start-ups at the Czech-French workshop on artificial intelligence

Minister Lipavský hosts a two-day workshop bringing together leading Czech and French researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs aimed at boosting joint projects and long-term partnerships in strategically important, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

One of the key goals stipulated in the 2018 Czech-French Strategic Partnership Action Plan is to work closely together in the area of innovation success and start-up support. Prague and Paris also support the common aim of EU countries that want to be among the global leaders in utilization of advanced AI technology. Some topics of the workshop are: usage of AI in open economic competitiveness, protection of individuals, and AI for the common good. Speakers are also discussing regulations and ethical issues, management of applied research in public administration, and the private and public sector.

“Digital application helps us modernize industry and create attractive work opportunities. Artificial intelligence contributes to improving our everyday lives, for example, in medicine, in education, in the smart management of cities and municipalities, or in protecting the environment. In accord with the goals of the Czech-French Strategic Partnership, we want to especially support small and medium technology firms and start-ups,” said Minister Jan Lipavský.
“France and the Czech Republic are both aware that artificial intelligence has a formidable transformational potential with broad social, economic, national security, and geopolitical implications, but also comes with significant challenges. To tackle them, we have adopted national strategies in line with the EU approach on AI and have taken the responsibility during the French and Czech EU Council presidencies, to promote our European sovereignty and EU legal framework with an ecosystem of trust and excellence for AI; this requires a risk-based approach on AI applications, and  support for innovation and skills. By supporting the strengthening of Czech-French cooperation and paving the way to increased EU partnerships, the workshop will contribute to reaching this objective,” said the Ambassador of France to the Czech Republic, Alexis Dutertre.

“We wanted to show what was already achieved and also initiate new cooperation. For example, the Czech Institute of Information, Robotics, and Cybernetics, ČVUT, works together very intensely with French institutions. We are creating amazing opportunities and our scientists work on truly cutting-edge research. On the other hand, we are reliable partners that bring forth results, and the research enriches our foreign partners. I believe today’s meeting will also give a new impulse for the realization of many thoughts and goals that were until now only on paper in the form of the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence,” informed professor Vladimír Mařík, scientific director of the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics, and Cybernetics, the Czech Technical University.
The workshop has been organized by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of France, Paris AI Research Institute (PRAIRIE), the French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology (INRIA), and the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics (CIIRC CTU). A number of distinguished Czech and French researchers, experts, and innovative entrepreneurs joined as well.
