Statement of the MFA on the Political Situation in Burma/Myanmar

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is deeply concerned about the political situation in Burma/Myanmar especially about the changes in its Government.(22/10/2004)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is deeply concerned about the political situation in Burma/Myanmar especially about the changes in its Government.

It is the opinion of the MFA of the CR, that the replacement of Prime Minister Khin Nyunt by General Soe Win and recently the replacement of Minister of Foreign Affairs Win Aung has delayed and endangered the possibility of starting dialogue with the opposition and its key representative Aung San Suu Kyi. These changes have decreased the chances for any improvement of the situation in the area of human rights, which is very serious in a long-term.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the CR calls on the military junta for an immediate and unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners. The NLD (National League for Democracy) - the winner of the 1990 elections - and other democratic and civic organisations must be given the possibility to participate in the democratisation of the political process in the country including new democratic elections.
