The Czech Republic unequivocally and without any doubts agrees with the conclusions of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission in Belarus and states that the parliamentary elections fell short of the standards of free, fair and democratic elections. On the basis of findings of its own observers, the Czech Republic states the same about the results of the referendum.

The present regime in Belarus could achieve the declared election victory only by having grossly manipulated public opinion and election results and by having excluded opposition representatives from the lists of candidates and election commissions. It has just again squandered the chance for an improvement of relations with the democratic world community. The Czech Republic regrets that these developments are likely to further deepen Belarus' international isolation.

The Czech Republic also expresses grave concern about further repressive actions by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko against the opposition and the democratically minded people in Belarus, manifested by violent suppression of demonstrations and arrests taking place these days. The Czech Republic intends to continue its systematic support for democratic forces in Belarus, included those involuntarily staying abroad.

The Czech Republic will actively participate in the preparation of further steps by the European Union aimed at the respect of human rights in Belarus and the country's gradual democratization.
