Statement of the MFA on the Date of Enlargment of the Schengen Area

The Czech Republic is seriously concerned about the postponing of the date of enlargment of the Schengen area...(12/9/2006)

The Czech Republic is seriously concerned about the postponing of the date of enlargment of the Schengen area. The change of schedule for the establishment of the new Schengen information system in summer 2008 and the postponing of the enlargment of the Schengen area for beginning of 2009 means a prolongation of the current undesirable situation, when Czech citizens can not fully enjoy one of the fundamental freedoms of the EU - the free movement of persons.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexandr Vondra stated: " I would like to assure our partners and the Czech people of the continuing effort of the Czech Republic for the enlargment of the Schengen area without controls on internal borders within an appropriate time interval. The Czech Republic will also take steps to reach a unification and coordination of positions of involved countries at the regional, bilateral and European level".
