Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic on developments in Libya

The Czech Republic has been following the events in Libya and is greatly concerned for the future of the country, which is in many ways crucial for the peaceful development and security of the whole region.

The Czech Republic calls for an immediate stop to all repression and use of force against peaceful demonstrators. We deplore the violence which caused a great number of civilian casualties and extend our condolences to the families of the victims. "It is important to stop the violence and to start a comprehensive political dialogue," said Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Karel Schwarzenberg who attended today's discussion on the situation in Libya at the FAC meeting in Brussels.

We urge the Government of Libya to start a political dialogue, which will lead to necessary reforms, the application of the rule of law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is especially important to respect the freedom of speech and assembly.

The Czech Republic stands always ready to share its experience with the transition to a democratic system of government.
