Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the extension of engagement in the operation supporting UN Security Council Resolutions 1790 and 1973

The Czech Republic has supported the decision of the North Atlantic Council on the extension of the Alliance’s engagement in the activities of the international community to enforce the UN Security Council resolutions concerning the situation in Libya.

NATO has already launched an operation aiming to enforce the compliance with the arms embargo and in short time it will engage in enforcing the no-fly zone. Both tasks are fully mandated by the UN Security Council resolution no. 1973. The Alliance is also ready to engage in activities in support of the humanitarian assistance. The overall effort of NATO is aimed at taking over the responsibility for all tasks, which, for the time being, are carried out by the international coalition.

The military operation should serve to put an end to the violence on the Libyan civilians and support protection of civilian population and inhabited areas. International activities arising from requirements of the Security Council resolution no 1973 and aiming to achieve this end enjoy, therefore, our full support.
