Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Syria

The Czech Republic strongly condemns the violence that has been taking place in the streets of Syria and that has resulted in numerous casualties among unarmed civilians. The responsibility for these innocent victims lies fully with the Syrian leadership.

The Czech Republic deplores the numerous victims and calls for a  thorough and impartial investigation of the violence.

The Czech Republic calls for an immediate and verifiable end to all violent operations of the Syrian armed forces against the demonstrators and for the respect of fundamental human rights, particularly freedom of speech and assembly.

The Czech Republic sees as unacceptable the fact that the country has expelled foreign journalists, which prevents objective news coverage, and it calls on the Syrian government to allow their return.

The Czech Republic in cooperation with other EU Member States, its allies and partners will advocate for a prompt, appropriate and effective response of the international community to further developments.

The Czech Republic expects that following the cessation of violence, work will immediately begin on the implementation of political and economic reforms, to which Syrian officials have pledged.
