MFA Statement on the elections in Kenya

The general elections in Kenya took place on Monday 4 March 2013. The official results were announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on 9 March.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs appreciates the peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections, and wishes to extend its congratulations to all successful candidates. The elections, closely watched by the whole world, were a great victory for Kenyan democracy, and above all for Kenyan voters whose high turnout was a clear proof of their strong and growing commitment to participating in the political life of their country.

However, in any country, elections are just the beginning of long process and it is up to the elected leaders to build democracy, to foster respect for human and civil rights, to strengthen national cohesion and to improve the country’s social and economic situation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its interest to cooperate with the Government of Kenya for the benefit of both countries.
