Statement of the MFA on Syria

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic expresses its concern over the reported use of chemical agents in Syria. Any use of chemical weapons is unacceptable and in breach of international law, regardless of the perpetrator’s identity and circumstances of the attack. It is of critical importance that the United Nations inspection team in the area should be allowed to conduct the most thorough investigation of the incident.

The situation in Syria is highly unpredictable and evolves rapidly, from day to day. The Ministry continues to devote every effort to gathering of all available information, its verification and critical evaluation. We closely follow events both inside Syria and on the international stage.

In relation to current speculation about a possible international military action against the Syrian armed forces or government facilities, the Czech Republic reiterates that it regards a peaceful diplomatic solution – i. e. reaching a ceasefire agreement as early as possible and opening of negotiations on the political transformation of the country – as the only viable solution to the conflict in Syria.
