Statement of the MFA on the Israeli Plan to Build New Housing Units in the Area of Giv’at Hamatos

The Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is concerned about the recent disclosure of the intent of the Israeli authorities to advance the construction of new housing units in the East Jerusalem area of Giv’at Hamatos.

The position of the European Union is unambiguous. The final result of the Middle East Peace Process should be two states – Israel and Palestine – living side by side in peace, security and cooperation. Thus any significant change of status quo in the sensitive area of East Jerusalem could have a detrimental effect on further progress in peace negotiations that – as Czech Republic firmly hopes – will be eventually renewed.

The Ministry of the Foreign Affairs calls on relevant Israeli authorities and the Government of the State of Israel to reconsider the plan of construction in the area of Giv’at Hamatos.
