Statement of the MFA on the Situation in Yemen

The Czech Republic welcomes the adoption of the UNSC Resolution 2216 (2015) and calls for its full implementation. The Czech Republic reiterates its support to the political process as the only way to restore stability and appreciates the efforts of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to convene a conference in Riyadh upon the request of the President of Yemen.

To achieve political stabilization, it is essential that all Yemeni parties, the Houthis in particular, abide by the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative, the outcomes of the comprehensive National Dialogue Conference and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The planned conference in Riyadh should complement UN-facilitated negotiations to support the resumption of the political transition in Yemen. Otherwise, there is a danger of growing influence of extremist and terrorist groups, particularly al-Qaeda, with serious regional consequences.

The Czech Republic is alarmed by significant and rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Yemen and urges all parties to facilitate the evacuation of civilian foreign nationals and personnel of international organizations. We commend steps already taken in this regard.
