Statement of the MFA on the General Elections in Myanmar/Burma

The Czech Republic followed with great attention the general elections in Myanmar/Burma on November 8, 2015, as well as preceding campaign. It is encouraging that the elections were conducted in calm, peaceful and relatively free manner. Major credit goes to the Burmese voters and their massive turnout that has clearly demonstrated their desire to fully use the opportunity to freely express their will after a quarter of a century.

The parliamentary elections mark – without any doubt – a historic milestone and the Czech Republic believes that ambitions, that the elections become one of the pillars of democratic reforms, will be confirmed also by the post-elections developments. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs appeals to all the interested parties to make sure that the vote counting, announcement of results and all other post-election steps are taken in accordance with the basic principles of parliamentary democracy and national unity and reconciliation. The Czech Republic stands ready to continue to support in concrete ways democratization and reform processes in Myanmar/Burma and assist in fulfilling democratic ambitions of the peoples of Myanmar/Burma.
