Statement by the Czech Republic on the Announcement of an Agreement between the Government of Colombia and the FARC on a Ceasefire and the End of Hostilities

The Czech Republic gladly adopted the announcement of an agreement on mutual definitive ceasefire between the Government of Colombia and the largest armed group FARC and the laying down of arms by this guerrilla group.

The ceremony held on June 23 of 2016 at a neutral venue in Cuba was attended apart from the President Santos and the supreme commander of the FARC also by the UN Secretary-General and the presidents of the five Latin American countries. The announcement is seen as one of the last steps before a full peace deal in signed, which is expected within weeks. We very much welcome the fact that the two sides are now close to signing a final peace agreement which the Colombian government has sought for many years. We believe there will be soon even consensus on the last open issue on the agenda that is the implementation of agreements, supervising of their execution and the way of ratifying the treaties by referendum.

The Czech Republic continues to support the peace process in Colombia and believes that soon there will be a ceasefire with the second largest Colombian guerrilla group ELN as well.
