MFA Statement on humanitarian convoy attack in Syria

Czech Republic strongly condemns the attack on the UN/Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) humanitarian aid convoy and its aid workers near Aleppo. We extend our condolences to the SARC and the families of humanitarian workers killed during the attack. This tragedy was a cruel reminder of how fragile the current ceasefire in Syria is.

We reiterate our call for the full respect of international humanitarian law by all parties to the Syrian conflict and their obligation to ensure the protection of humanitarian aid workers and civilians at all times. We call on all parties to the conflict to refrain from such aggressive acts and to respect fully the cessation of hostilities. We stress the urgent need for all of us to unite our efforts to fight terrorist organizations, particularly ISIL and Jabhat al-Nusra.

It´s of utmost importance for Syria that cessation of hostilities is respected and prolonged indefinitely to open the way for the political settlement. We strongly believe that the regional powers should do more to achieve this goal. Czech Republic supports the US-Russian ceasefire efforts as a prerequisite for the activities of the UN Special Representative de Mistura and the implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
