Statement concerning the situation in Aleppo

The Czech Republic is deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation and continuing hostilities in Aleppo.

The Czech Republic stresses the utmost importance of reaching a political solution to the Syrian conflict that does not have a military solution. We call on all sides of the conflict to resume meaningful peace negotiations under the UN auspices.

The Czech Republic will continue its humanitarian efforts to alleviate suffering of the civilian population of Syria that is the main victim of the conflict.

We fully support the recent statements of the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides who called for an immediate protection of civilians in Aleppo.

We are deeply concerned by the level of reported atrocities in Aleppo against innocent civilians, including women and children and destruction of civilian infrastructure. The civilians including medical personnel must be protected at all cost.

Those responsible for the war crimes and crimes against humanity must be held accountable.
