Statement of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the current situation in the DRC

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is deeply concerned about the current aggravation of the security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

We express our regret to hear about the death of the reported tens of civilians during the protests that followed the end of the term of President Joseph Kabila on 19th December 2016. We call on all parties involved, especially the security forces as well as protesters, to refrain from violence and to maintain peaceful actions. We call on President Kabila and the new government of Prime Minister Samy Badibanga to continue to seek a widely accepted political and stable solution of the situation until the next elections. We support the continuing efforts of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) to mediate the talks between the parties involved.
