MFA Statement on Frank-Walter Steinmeier's Election as new German President

The election of the new German Federal president took place in Berlin on February 12th, 2017. The Federal Assembly as the highest authority summoned up for this election and consisting of members of the Federal Parliament and representatives of countries voted with high majority for Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier went in this election not only as a common candidate of the ruling big coalition but also as the for a long time most popular politician in Germany. This broad public support together with his far-seeing political style make Frank-Walter Steinmeier a strong voice of reason and stability needed in today's world.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic congratulates Mr. Steinmeier on being elected.
