Statement of the MFA on the current developments in Syria

The Czech Republic has strongly condemned the barbaric attack against civilians in Douma and called for its immediate investigation in the past days. The Czech Republic understands the US and allies' military action as a clear message to anyone, who would want to carry on with the chemical attacks in Syria.

The UN Security Council has not been able to take effective measures to resolve the situation. The Czech Republic supports the EU and NATO declaration. Together with the EU and other allies we call on all parties of the conflict in Syria to contribute to its de-escalation and to resume the peace negotiations in order to find a political solution.

The Czech Republic always strongly condemned and will condemn any use of chemical weapons. We fully support re-establishment of an independent international mechanism to investigate the use of chemical weapons as well as strict punishment of perpetrators.

The role of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus remains important, in particular because of the possibility to communicate between the different parties of the conflict, to deliver humanitarian aid, to convey standpoints of the Czech Republic and the EU to the Syrian government and to represent our allies in the country including the USA.
