Statement of the MFA on the Venezuelan elections

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is deeply concerned about the outcome of the Venezuelan presidential elections, in which the President Nicolás Maduro was re-elected. These elections did not adhere to basic democratic rules, participation of international observation missions was not allowed, and low participation (46%) of voters demonstrated resignation and concerns of Venezuelan citizens.

In Venezuela, attacks on political parties and organizations continue on daily basis. Human rights and fundamental freedoms are not fully respected. The local population lacks basic services and food products. The crime rate is constantly growing. Therefore, it is important for the Venezuelan people that order, political and civil rights in the country are restored.

We call for the Venezuelan government to launch a constructive dialogue with the opposition, to release political prisoners and to embark on a path to restore order and democratic freedoms in the country. Free and fair democratic elections should be at the end of this process.

The Czech Republic will continue to fully support the EU's policy towards Venezuela given that only the political pressure of the international community and regional organizations can lead to a peaceful political solution.
