Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic on the resolution of the bilateral dispute between Macedonia and Greece

The Czech Republic congratulates Prime Ministers Zaev and Tsipras for reaching the historic agreement between Macedonia and Greece. This achievement belongs to all citizens of the two countries.

At the same time, the agreement represents a significant step for the whole southeastern Europe. It was reached through the negotiation process mediated by personal envoy of the UN Secretary General M. Nimetz, with the support of the EU. The prospect of membership in the EU and NATO for Macedonia was an essential factor that facilitated the negotiation.

The European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkan countries is the strongest stabilization factor in the region, and therefore these processes will continue to enjoy the Czech Republic's full support. Following the agreement between Macedonia and Greece, the Czech Republic expects that at the end of June the European Council will launch accession talks between the EU and Macedonia (jointly with Albania) and that in July at the NATO Summit Macedonia will obtain an invitation to join the Alliance.
