MFA Statement on the death penalty in the United States

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic regrets the decision of the United States to resume executions at the federal level. If upheld, the decision announced by the US Department of Justice at the end of July will break a 16-year long informal moratorium on the federal death penalty. According to the US Department of Justice, first federal death row inmates will be executed in December.

Executions represent a cruel, inhuman and irreversible punishment and violate the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic calls on the United States to reconsider its decision to resume the federal death penalty and reiterates its principled opposition to capital punishment under all circumstances. The Czech Republic and the European Union as a whole will continue working towards the abolition of the death penalty worldwide.
