Statement of the MFA on the International Day Against Homophobia

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is observed annually on 17 May to commemorate the decision of the World Health Organisation to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder on that day thirty years ago. On this occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic calls for respect for the rights of all people regardless of their sexual orientation.

For the Czech Republic, violation of human rights on the grounds of perceived or actual sexual orientation and gender identity is unacceptable. Marginalization or even criminalization of LGBTI persons is in direct contradiction to the commitments to combat all forms of violence, discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes.

In joint efforts with other countries, we make our best to handle the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in many parts of the world, LGBTI persons face stigma, discrimination, domestic violence, restrictions in access to health services. Not infrequently, they are exposed to poverty, increased unemployment and homelessness. For these reasons, we welcome the statement by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on targeted actions needed to protect LGBTI persons amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As a member of the Equal Rights Coalition, the Czech Republic also joined the declaration on COVID-19 and the human rights of LGBTI persons.

We fully support EU actions to promote equality and the rights of LGBTI persons. The task of the Czech human rights and transition promotion policy is to contribute to a dignified life for all, without distinction. The Czech Republic will continue to be actively involved in cooperation with international organizations, civic society and the non-governmental and non-profit sectors in order to defend human rights, dignity and diversity.
