Statement of the MFA on the sentencing of Yury Dmitriev

Sentencing Russian historian and human rights defender Yury Dmitriev to 3,5 years in penal colony is a cynical abuse of judiciary system. It represents yet another attempt of Russian authorities to politicize history, to monopolize the right of its interpretation and to deny the truth about the crimes the Soviet regime committed on Russians, Ukrainians and other nations of the Soviet Union. Jury Dmitriev bravely described murders of both real and alleged dissidents of Soviet regime including six Czechs executed in 1937.

This unjust sentence of Yury Dmitriev based on the bogus charges contradicts international commitments of the Russian Federation, including obligations resulting from the Council of Europe membership. The Czech Republic will strive for appropriate attention for Yury Dmitriev case also at the EU level.
