According to the findings, serious human rights violations have been committed against Uyghur and other predominantly Muslim communities in Xinjiang in the context of application of counter-terrorism and counter-extremism strategies. The report provides evidence of actions that may amount to crimes against humanity.

The report documents cases of arbitrary detention in the political re-education camps, enforced disappearances, cases of torture and cruel or inhuman treatment, including forced labor and sexual violence. It also states that there are serious indications of violations of reproductive rights and evidence of family separation, intimidation and discrimination based on religious belief.

We therefore join the call to release all individuals who have been arbitrarily deprived of their liberty and to immediately repeal all discriminatory laws, policies and practices against Uyghur and other minorities in Xinjiang. The Chinese government must ensure that national laws and policies are brought into compliance with international human rights law and standards. In accordance with the report’s recommendations, we will work closely with our international partners to hold China accountable for these human rights violations.
