MFA Statement on Tuesday's Attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad

The Czech Republic expresses its deep concern at Tuesday's organized attack by a large group of people, including some bearing the insignia of Iraq’s official armed units, on the premises of the US Embassy in Baghdad.

Regrettably, the Iraqi security forces entrusted with security in the area have failed to prevent the attack, which damaged some outer installations of this diplomatic mission and temporarily limited the exercise of its functions. The Czech Republic calls on Iraqi authorities to fully investigate this incident.

The Czech Republic recalls the Iraqi government’s “special duty” under Article 22 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to “take all appropriate steps to protect the premises of the mission against any intrusion or damage and to prevent any disturbance of the peace of the mission or impairment of its dignity”, as well as its responsibility to exercise full, exclusive oversight and control over all elements of the Iraqi security forces.
