Statement by the MFA on International Day to end impunity for crimes against journalists

On November 2, we commemorate the International Day to end impunity for crimes against journalists worldwide. The Czech Republic is actively committed to the defense of human rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Journalists must be able to perform their profession freely and independently. Crimes against journalists and media workers are unacceptable and must be punished. Independent media form the cornerstone of any democratic society, and their active defense unfortunately remains relevant also today.

The Czech Republic speaks out on the international scene to support media freedom and to investigate attacks on specific journalists. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs contributes to the development of independent media within the framework of transition promotion program. Since last year, the Czech Republic has been an active member of the Media Freedom Coalition, and is supporting its declaration to end impunity for crimes against journalists.
