Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský Discusses Innovation and Economic Cooperation in India

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský visited India from February 26 to March 1, 2023, where he held talks with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and the Trade and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. On the last day of the visit, the Minister met with Indian companies and other representatives from the business community in Mumbai.

"We want to strengthen the strategic dialogue from the point of view of innovation. We wwould like to cooperate, not only economically, but also in science and research, the defense industry, cyber security, healthcare, energy, ICT, and the development of smart cities," Minister Lipavský said from his meetings in Delhi and Mumbai.

Meeting with Minister Jaishankar, Minister Lipavský commended India's role in building the security architecture of the Indo-Pacific region. The two ministers, of course, also discussed the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine.

"I reiterated our hope that India goes further to support the efforts of the international democratic community to end the war in Ukraine in accordance with the principles of the United Nations."

The Minister was also accompanied to India by a trade mission led by the Union of Industry and Transport of the Czech Republic. Its members attended the Minister's meeting with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, in which both sides affirmed their interest in holding a ministerial-level joint economic committee in the second half of this year.

In Delhi, Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar spoke as the guest of honor at the opening of the first ever India-Europe Business and Sustainability Conclave, where he outlined additional possibilities for economic cooperation with the Czech Republic and with the EU. The Czech Republic was one of the main partner countries of the Conclave.

"India is poised to become the most populous country and is interested in our solutions for sustainable economy and infrastructure development. We talked about strengthening scientific mobility and increasing the involvement of Czech and Indian universities on joint projects, as well as with the EU. The discussion of the diversification of defense partners resonates strongly here. Czech companies confirm that they could flourish here with offers tailored to local needs. We also discussed the possibilities of joint progress in third markets where Indian companies have a strong position," added Jan Lipavský.

Minister Lipavský supported further developing tourism through negotiations with airlines about a possible direct air connection between Delhi and Prague. The reopening of the Consulate General in Mumbai will also be a step towards connecting the two nations.

The Minister also highlighted the Prague Zoo's cooperation with Indian partners; the Zoo hopes to acquiring Gujarati lions.
