Czech Republic is actively involved in the Coalition for the Sahel

On 12 June 2020, Deputy Minister Martin Povejšil attended the first Foreign Affairs Ministers  video teleconferencing meeting of the Coalition for the Sahel.

International Coalition for the Sahel was launched at the Pau Summit in January 2020. Its objective is to unite the initiatives of the G5 Sahel States and their international partners to address together the challenges of the Sahel: fighting terrorist groups, building the capacity of regular armed forces, supporting the return of the state administration to the entire national territory and providing development assistance.

In his speech, Deputy Minister for Security and Multilateral Affairs underlined the importance of this day for the Czech engagement in the Sahel, which dates from 2013. „The Czech Republic welcomes the establishment of the Coalition for the Sahel to coordinate all international initiatives,” said Povejšil and added: “As a member state of the European Union, the Czech Republic is committed to working closely with the Sahel countries and international partners to help create a stable, well-functioning and prosperous region”.

Also today, Brigadier General František Ridzák took over the command of the EU Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali) for the next six months. This is for the first time in history that the Czech Republic is taking responsibility for an international military mission. This engagement is a part of the Czech Republic's long-term strategy to support the stabilization and development of the Sahel countries for the period 2018-2021.
