Videoconference of EU State Secretaries on the upcoming German Presidency of the Council of the EU and other current issues


On Friday June 12, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Miloslav Stašek represented the Czech Republic in the videoconference of State Secretaries of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the EU member states. The meeting focused on the priorities of the German Presidency of the EU Council and the implications of COVID-19 on national  and EU diplomacies.

At the opening of the meeting chaired by Helga Schmid, Director General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), State Secretaries heard a presentation by German colleague Miguel Berger on the priorities of the German Presidency in the EU and discussed the need to increase the solidarity and collective capacity to strengthen European sovereignty in the world in the light of the current crisis. They agreed that Foreign Ministries have a crucial role to play to ensure a global strategic approach and coherence.

The participants of the videoconference also addressed current EEAS management issues and those of national Ministries of Foreign Affairs in connection with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including regular diplomatic rotation. Finally, they also discussed digital diplomacy.
