Director General Povejšil met with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights

 

Director General for Security Policy and Multilateral Affairs, Mr. Martin Povejšil, met with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović, on February 23, 2023. Together, they discussed the situation following the influx of refugees as a result of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the need to ensure accountability for the crimes committed by Russia, as well as support to Russian and Belarusian civil society.

Mr. Povejšil highlighted activities of Czechia in connection with the situation in Ukraine, be it within the framework of international organizations or through specific programmes of assistance. In addition to helping refugees from Ukraine, activities of the Ministry are also focused on human rights defenders, journalists and activists from Russia and Belarus, also within the Civil Society Programme. Commissioner Mijatović once again praised the unprecedented level of solidarity and support that is being provided in the framework of the current crisis, both from the government, non-profit sector and ordinary citizens. Based on the monitoring of the situation and its findings, she stands ready to use all means given by her mandate to solve the current issues.

The Commissioner's current mission takes place from February 20 - 24, 2023. It is a regular monitoring mission to determine the state of human rights in the countries of the Council of Europe (the last mission in Czechia took place in 2012).
