Minister Petříček delivered a speech at the conference of the Coalition for Sahel's partner countries

On 19 March 2021, Minister Tomáš Petříček delivered a speech at the Second Conference of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Coalition for Sahel's partner countries, which followed the February summit of the G5 Sahel (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger) in N´Djamena, the capital of Chad.

The aim of the conference was to adopt a "roadmap" with concrete tasks to help the Sahel states assist to efficiently fight against jihadist and criminal armed groups, ensure the security of all citizens and achieve the return of state structures and basic services to the most affected regions.

In his speech, Minister Petříček emphasized that the only way to achieve sustainable progress in the Sahel is a collective and well-targeted response from all partners in the Coalition. The "Roadmap" of Coalition Activities for 2021 is an ambitious project that envisages, among other things, the creation of a strong and impartial civilian administration and judiciary ready to fight impunity and human rights abuses. Only in this way is it possible to gain the trust of the local population and long-term stability.

Minister Petříček assured the Conference participants that the stabilization and development of the Sahel remains one of the Czech Republic's foreign policy priorities and will be part of our presidency of the European Union in 2022.

The Minister also congratulated the Coalition's High Representative, Djimé Adoum of Chad, on his appointment and wished him good luck.

The Coalition for the Sahel was created at a summit held in the French city of Pau on 13 January 2020. The Coalition enables joint coordination and interaction of the various components of international assistence in support of the G5 countries. The coalition focuses on four main pillars of activities: 1) the fight against armed terrorist groups, 2) strengthening the capacity building of the armed forces of the countries of the region, 3) supporting the return of state administration throughout the country and 4) providing development assistance. The Coalition for the Sahel is working with two other international initiatives to support the Sahel countries: the Partnership for Security and Stability in the Sahel (P3S) and the Alliance for the Sahel. The Secretariat of the Coalition for the Sahel was established in February 2020 and will be based in Brussels from the summer of 2021. The Czech Republic is represented in the Coalition by Tomáš Uličný, Special Representative for the Sahel.
