Czech Republic in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition LIMA '17

On March 21st-25th, 2017, seven Czech companies: Omnipol, Aero Vodochody, Retia, PBS Velká Bíteš, Optokon, Strojírna Litvínov and Inflatech took part in the international exhibition of maritime and aerospace technology LIMA '17 in Langkawi, Malaysia. The Czech participation was organized by the Czech Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and it included, among others, a business presentation with matchmaking at the exhibition hall. The Czech business mission was led by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic, H.E. Rudolf Hykl.

LIMA exhibition is one of two biennial military exhibitions in Malaysia and has been taking place since 1991. This year marked the fourteenth installment of the exhibition, which hosted more than 500 exhibitors from 36 countries, a display of 106 aircraft and 50 ships on the area of 199.209 m2. The exhibition greeted more than 200.000 visitors, out of which 40.000 were trade visitors.

The Czech booth hosted Mr. Jiří Řezáč of Omnipol, showcasing mainly the new type of passive locator VERA NG, Mr. Giuseppe Giordo (CEO)and Mrs. Alice Undusová (VP for marketing) of AERO Vodochody, who promoted the next generation military jet trainer L-39 NG and the company's current 'flagship' the L-159 Light Combat Aircraft, Mr. Michal Juran of the Retia company, which specializes in production and overhaul of military radar systems, but also produces radars aimed at detection through walls, Mr. Petr Jašek and Mr. Jaroslav Melichar of PBS Velká Bíteš, a company producing the full portfolio of turboprop, turbojet and turboshaft engines for UAVs, Mr. Jan Špatka of Strojírna Litvínov, a manufacturer of vertical wind tunnels for freefall training, Mr. Tomáš Ledajaks of Inflatech, a company producting advanced inflatable decoys and Mr. Azenan Azalan, Managing Director of Malaysia office of Optokon, producer of ruggedized digital and optical network infrastructure optimized for field use.

The Embassy held a business seminar titled "Czech Defense Technology Presentation" at the exhibition hall. The seminar began with the opening remarks by Ambassador Hykl. The Economic Officer V. Hromek introduced the Czech aerospace and defence sectors in his presentation, followed by individual company presentations. The participants were then able to engage in a businessmatching session during the cocktail held by the Embassy. The seminar received media coverage by the Czech Radio reporter Mr. David Jakš.

The Czech booth was visited by the Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Najib Razak, Deputy Minister of Defence of Malaysia H.E. Johari Baharum, Chief of Armed Forces of Malaysia Gen. Mohamed Affandi and representatives of the armed forces of Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam nad Bahrain.

The feedback received from the participating companies was positive. Strojírna Litvínov confirmed two contracts in Thailand and one in Malaysia. There was a lot of interest in the Aero Vodochody and the production program of PBS Velká Bíteš. LIMA Exhibition is one of the most significant military exhibitions in South East Asia. The Czech participation this year saw an increase both in the form and the quantity of participating companies.

Beside the Czech Republic, there were national booths/pavilions by USA, Russia, Australia, France, Belarus, Turkey and Korea. Notable companies also took part on the exhibition, such as: Boeing, Airbus, Dassault, Thales, Roketsan, Honeywell, Curtis Wright, Almaz, Saab, MD Helicopter, Piaggio and Embraer, etc.
