Your participation in the Conference will give you a unique opportunity to engage in debates on topics setting the development of the museum field for several years to come. ICOM’s core documents, the museum definition and ICOM’s Code of Ethics, will be discussed as well. The Power of Museums has been chosen as the main theme of the Conference, because we believe that museums can make the world a better place. We will address issues of sustainable development, leadership, and we will also debate the impact of museums on the development of civil society and the use of new technologies. The International Committees of ICOM traditionally provide a wealth of space for communication; they will hold their meetings during the ICOM General Conference and follow up on the debates from the main panels. Furthermore, the Conference offers an opportunity to get to know the Czech Republic and its museums. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and a magnificent open-air museum in itself, will become a meeting point for museum professionals from all over the world.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, the conference will have a hybrid format, i.e. it will be held in-person as well as online. This will enable museum professionals who would not be able to attend due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related limitations to take part in the General Conference, and – last but not least – also those who are hindered by the travelling and attendance costs.

A high degree of inclusiveness of the ICOM General Conference is provided by the keynote speeches and panel discussions being interpreted into English, French and Spanish.

The General Conference will be held for the first time in the Czech Republic, which was, in 1946, one of the founding members of ICOM, the International Council of Museums. This year, the Czech Republic will become for a week the centre of the museum world.
