West Slavic Christmas Eve at the Institute of Slavistics of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ljubljana

On December 16, 2015, the Department of West Slavic Languages at the Institute of Slavistics of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ljubljana held traditional West Slavic Christmas Eve (Zahodnoslovanski božični večer).

The students proved their knowledge of languages that are taught  at the Department (Czech, Slovak, Polish) in the form of  songs,  sketches, translations and literature readings at this pre-Christmas gathering of students, teachers and representatives of the leadership of the Faculty.

The festive evening was opened by the Head of the Institute of Slavistics prof. dr. Namita Subiotto with students. The evening is traditionally held with the presence of representatives of all three Embassies whose languages are taught at the Department. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in LJubljana was represented by attaché Mr. Josef Samson and by an assistant for culture and educatiion Mrs. Jana Šnytová. Mr. Samson in his speech appreciated the knowldege of Czech language of the students and wished them in the name of the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Ljubljana H. E. Věra Zemanová much success in their further studies and merry Christmas.

After that, the students performed particular points of the programme where they showed their deep knowledge of Czech language. At the beginning they sang Czech Christmas carols and songs and then short theatre performance on Christmas theme in Czech followed. The winners of the translation contest read passages from their translations as well as passages from the poetry with Christmas theme in Czech. An informal part of the programme followed.
