Meeting of the EU and Candidate Countries Ambassadors in Krško Nuclear Power Plant

Within the framework of the Czech Presidency in the Council of the EU the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Juraj Chmiel organised the meeting of the EU and candidate countries Ambassadors in the Krško Nuclear Power Plant. The meeting included presentation of the Nuclear Power Plant, tour over the site as well as discussion concerning the Slovenian energy situation. At the end, the Ambassadors met with the Mayor of the Municipality of Krško at the Rajhenburg Castle. The gathering was also attended by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Croatia Milan Hovorka. 

After the short introduction delivered by the Czech Ambassador Juraj Chmiel the present guests learned the basic information about the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, which is being shared among Slovenia and Croatia, its role in the Slovenian energy mix and Slovenian energy policy, as well as about the plans for future extension and development. The presentations of Mr. Stane Rožman, President of the Management Board of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant and Mr. Martin Novšak, Senior Advisor to the CEO of the GEN Energija company, the owner of the Slovenian share in the Nuclear Power Plant, focused on the role of nuclear energy in times of ongoing energetic and climatic crisis, as well as on the security measures connected to the operation of the Plant. The Ambassadors and other participants also discussed the contemporary challenges faced by Slovenia and the whole Europe. The presenters outlined several possible solutions with an emphasis on nuclear energy as a clean, stable and effective source.

The programme continued with the meeting of the Ambassadors with the Mayor of the Municipality of Krško Miran Stanko at the castle Rajhenburg. The Mayor has shortly introduced the Krško region, its civic, social and economic structure, its plans for the future as well as it rich cultural and historical background. The event was finished by the tour over the castle Rajhenburg, which is the cultural and historical centre of the area with the dramatic history of the Order of the Trappists and the German occupation during the Second World War.
